A labiaplasty is a procedure that aims to remove excess skin around the labia minora or labia majora to increase comfort and improve the size and shape of the labia. Elongated or enlarged labia, or labia hypertrophy, is a common concern among women. Some women with large or long labia may feel dissatisfied with their vaginal appearance, or they might suffer from physical discomfort. (2) The excess tissue can cause bothersome chafing, especially during physical activity or while wearing tight clothing. At Monarch Plastic Surgery, there are a variety of options to help women restore their confidence and sexual wellness.

Labiaplasty Procedure

Labiaplasty typically begins with the administration of anesthesia to ensure each patient feels comfortable and relaxed going into their procedure. This procedure can either be completed comfortably in the office under local anesthesia, or in the operating room under general anesthesia. After this, your surgeon will remove the excess tissue, reshaping it to create a more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing appearance. The procedure can last 1-2 hours on average and is considered an outpatient treatment. This means the patient will be released home the same day as their procedure.

With their knowledge and experience, each patient’s surgeon will tailor the procedure to their individual needs, choosing the surgical techniques best suited for the corrections being sought out.

Recovery

Labiaplasty is typically categorized as an outpatient procedure, meaning the patient can return home on the same day as their appointment. Following the procedure, patients may experience bruising, swelling, and tenderness at the treatment site. In many cases, these effects can be managed with pain medication prescribed by the surgeon and typically subside within the first week of healing. We recommend that patients pre-arrange any necessary time off from work or other social activities to rest for the first week or two following the procedure. Many patients opt for tight compression shorts to minimize swelling during this time, while others may choose to soak in sitz baths for comfort. After one week, patients often feel comfortable enough to return to work, but it is important to continue to avoid sexual intercourse, tampon use, or gym activities for up to 4 weeks after the procedure. Recovery times may vary depending on the patient and the extent of the procedure.

Results of a Labiaplasty

After healing, the results of the labiaplasty will become more apparent. Patients will be able to notice their newly reduced labia minora that aligns more closely with their aesthetic goals. Tighter, form-fitting clothing can feel more comfortable, and patients will no longer need to worry about overly large or elongated labia causing discomfort or pain during physical or sexual activity. Is it normal to have uneven or long labia?

It is completely normal for women to have long or uneven labia. Many women experience this, but for some women, overly long labia can impact daily comfort. Long or large labia can cause chafing or pulling during movement or while wearing fitted clothing; many women have aesthetic concerns relating to the labia as well. Large labia can cause unwanted bulging while wearing close-fitting garments or swimwear, causing many women to feel self-conscious. While labiaplasty is a procedure that can increase the aesthetic look of your labia, there are plenty of women who undergo this procedure to help relieve irritating issues as well.

Will my labiaplasty impact clitoral sensation?

Patients who receive a clitoral hood reduction may see an increase in sensation or pleasure as the tissue is removed. Apart from this, your labiaplasty will not affect your level of sensation.
