Benefits of a Breast Augmentation
There are many cosmetic and reconstructive benefits to receiving a breast augmentation. Many patients often undergo breast augmentation to help restore the shape, symmetry, and elasticity of the breasts. Women who have undergone a mastectomy or have suffered changes to the breasts due to trauma or congenital conditions often choose this treatment to help address these issues and create a more aesthetically pleasing breast mound.

Types of Breast Implant
There are two main types of breast implants on the market today: silicone and saline. Each type of breast implant has its unique benefits and can help each patient achieve their aesthetic goals in different ways. The type of implant selected will be dependent upon each patient’s consultation with their surgeon.
Implants can either be textured or smooth. Implants that are textured are designed to minimize any chance of unwanted rotation in the body when placed above the pectoral muscle. (2) The texturing used is also aimed at reducing the chance of capillary contracture, or the forming of scar tissue around a foreign object in the body. (2) At Monarch Plastic Surgery, with our team’s years of experience, most risks are minimized; however, it is important to follow all recovery procedures to ensure the best results.
Silicone Implants
Silicone implants are a type of breast implant composed of a biocompatible silicone shell that is filled with a silicone gel to help enhance the shape and structure of the breasts. Silicone implants can either be tear-shaped or round. Silicone implants with a highly cohesive gel are called gummy bear implants and are designed to further imitate the natural look and feel of breast tissue.
At Monarch Plastic Surgery, we are proud to offer patients the option of Sientra silicone gel breast implants. Sientra implants have a softer feel to more closely mimic the look and feel of the breasts and are available in more than 340 options. They are FDA-approved and have some of the lowest complication rates clinically shown through a robust 10-year study. Sientra implants are designed to hold their shape while maintaining a remarkably soft feel and are backed by their Platinum20 warranty.
Saline Implants
Saline implants are composed of a silicone shell with a sterile saline filling. These implants can be inserted either pre-filled or empty and can be filled to a variety of sizes, creating a fully customized experience. These implants often have a smaller incision when inserted empty, but patients with thinner skin may be more prone to visible rippling with this kind of implant.
Ideal Candidates
Candidates interested in breast augmentation include:
- Individuals experiencing deformities in the breast caused by injury or trauma
- Women interested in reconstructing their breasts after a mastectomy
- Those who are dissatisfied with the shape or volume of their breasts
- Women experiencing symptoms of breast ptosis, elasticity, and other signs and symptoms of aging or weight loss
All interested candidates should be in good overall health with no underlying medical conditions that may impair the body’s natural healing process. Patients who smoke should be prepared to quit a few weeks before their procedure until fully recover. Tobacco and nicotine can impair the body’s natural ability to heal, making it important for patients to refrain from smoking.

Personal Consultation
Each patient at Monarch Plastic Surgery is required to schedule a personal consultation before each procedure so that your doctor can get to know you on a more personal level and to better understand your body and treatment goals. Each patient will have a full conversation regarding the full cost of their procedure and our available financing plans. Each patient will also have a full discussion with their doctor regarding the type of implant they are interested in, and the best type of incision for their procedure. We encourage patients to bring any questions and concerns to their consultation so that their doctor can address them. No matter what questions you may have, a member of our expertly trained team will be able to help you!

Preparation
Each doctor will compose a set of instructions for each patient at their consultation to ensure each patient is properly prepared leading up to their procedure. Patients should ensure they are following each preparation instruction to ensure optimal results and a smooth recovery. Patients may be asked to cease or adjust certain medications or supplements leading up to their procedure. Patients who smoke should be prepared to quit before their procedure and refrain from tobacco or nicotine use until fully healed or approved by their surgeon.
Procedure
General anesthesia is used during this procedure to ensure a more comfortable procedure for each patient. After the anesthetic takes effect, the surgeon will make an incision. The placement of the incision will be predetermined based on your treatment goals and anatomy. The incision can either be made at the inframammary fold, also known as the breast crease, or it can be periareolar (around the edge of the areola).
Once the incision is made, your surgeon will create a pocket to place the implant. The pocket can either be submuscular (underneath the breast tissue and the pectoral muscle) or sub-glandular (underneath the breast tissue, but above the pectoral muscle) and the placement of the pocket will also be determined at your consultation. Each placement has its benefits; a sub-glandular placement can help reduce the healing time, but a submuscular placement can provide a more natural-looking result. (2)
Your surgeon will then place the implants into the created pockets. Silicone implants are pre-filled while saline implants can be inserted either pre-filled or empty. The type of implant chosen will be the determining factor in how the implant is placed. Empty inserts are filled after placement to the optimal size, creating the best contour for the patient’s unique situation.
Recovery

Following a breast augmentation procedure, patients should ensure they follow any recovery directions given by their surgeon or another member of our highly skilled team. Patients may feel discomfort or soreness at the treatment site and experience swelling and bruising. These effects can be managed through the use of pain medications. Patients should rest and avoid any physical activities or strenuous exercise. After 2-4 weeks of healing, the majority of the swelling will have subsided and patients will slowly be able to return to their job and daily schedule. Patients may experience the implants visibly settling into a more natural position on the chest after 6-8 weeks of healing. Patients will be able to enjoy the full effects of their new breast placement about 3-6 months after their procedure, with scarring continuing to fade over the following year.
Results of a Breast Augmentation
Patients will be able to enjoy their newly sculpted breasts after the implants settle into their placements. Patients find that their breasts will feel and appear more symmetrical and rounded after receiving implants. Patients who undergo a breast augmentation often report a heightened sense of confidence and self-esteem following the rejuvenation of the breasts. The results of breast augmentation are long-lasting, providing durable improvements for patients with all sorts of aesthetic goals.
