Women who have had breast augmentation or reconstruction may decide to remove breast implants for personal reasons or in the case of unusual complications, implant ruptures or leaks, or discomfort from scar tissue. Breast implants may also need to be exchanged or removed every 10-15 years, as they are not lifelong devices.
Breast implant removal can involve these options:
- Removal only: Many women choose this option, especially if the implants are on the smaller side or if the woman is 50 years old or younger.
- Breast lift: In older women and those with large implants, the breasts often appear saggy when the implants are removed. In these cases, women frequently have a breast lift (mastopexy), a surgical procedure that raises and reshapes the breasts. A breast lift can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin that surrounds the nipple.
- Fat transfer: After implants have been removed, excess fat cells can be transferred from areas such as the abdomen, hips or waist using a traditional liposuction technique, then injected into the breasts. The result is a small increase in overall size for a more natural look.
